Jilted lover sets self ablaze in Jigawa

A 35-year-old woman, Maryam Aminu, has set herself ablaze after accusing her 40-year-old boyfriend, Ibrahim Haruna, of cheating in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

An eyewitness, Muhammad Yusuf, disclosed that the woman became furious when she learnt that her boyfriend went to see another woman and set herself ablaze.

“She is a jealous commercial sex worker living in the neighbourhood.

“The lady suspected that her boyfriend went to see another woman and attempted to commit suicide,” Yusuf said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State, Adamu Shehu, disclosed that the woman set herself ablaze at about 2 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, at Gindin Dinya area of Dutse, the state capital.

Shehu said preliminary investigations showed that the lady used petrol and set herself ablaze, adding that some people in the neighbourhood extinguished the fire and rescued the lady.

“Although the cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, it was alleged to be connected to a relationship with her 40-year-old boyfriend, identified as Ibrahim Haruna.

“The lady suffered second-degree burns, she is currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital, Dutse,” he said.
