The Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved a total of N152.4 billion as the 2026 budget for the 23 local government councils in the state.
The budget was passed following the unanimous adoption of the report presented by the House Committee on Appropriation and Implementation during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Dahiru Yusuf. The committee chairman, Hon. Shehu Yunusa, laid the report before the House after detailed scrutiny of the proposal.
Addressing journalists after the sitting, the Speaker explained that the budget proposal was earlier forwarded to the Assembly by the state governor and subsequently referred to the committee for comprehensive review.
He disclosed that all 23 local government councils appeared before the committee to defend their 2025 budget performance and present their projections for 2026.
According to him, the defence sessions enabled lawmakers to examine the proposals thoroughly before harmonising the figures. Although the total budget size remained at N152.4 billion, adjustments were made internally, including reallocations between recurrent and capital expenditures, to improve efficiency and balance.
The Speaker urged local government chairmen to focus on capital projects capable of delivering tangible benefits to residents across the state.
He also assured that the Assembly would strengthen its oversight responsibilities to ensure proper implementation of the budget, adding that lawmakers would serve as watchdogs in their constituencies to promote transparency and accountability at the grassroots level.
