The Kaduna State Government has expressed concern over the low turnout in the ongoing voter registration exercise and called on council chairmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the media to step up mobilisation of eligible citizens.
Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani has already taken steps to boost participation across the state.
He made the remarks on Thursday while addressing a stakeholders’ meeting convened to review challenges and devise strategies to improve turnout.
Maiyaki disclosed that preliminary reports from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicate that Kaduna and the wider North West are lagging behind in registration figures, a situation that has attracted the attention of the federal government.
He stressed that the exercise goes beyond politics, noting: “This is about encouraging all segments of society—youths, women, the elderly, and every gender group—to participate actively in the democratic process.”
The commissioner commended council chairmen who have already launched sensitisation drives, adding that the meeting was designed to share experiences and harmonise grassroots mobilisation.
The session was held in two phases: one with the media to raise awareness, and a technical session with council chairmen to fine-tune local strategies.
