Forty-five-year-old Furera Ahmad has emerged as the only woman among the 19 candidates seeking to become governor of Kano State in the 2027 governorship election.
Ahmad, who is contesting on the platform of the Boot Party (BP), is listed alongside 18 male candidates on the governorship candidates’ list displayed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at its Kano office.
She will contest the election with Muhammad Usman as her running mate.
Her emergence makes her the lone female candidate in a race dominated by male politicians, including incumbent Governor Abba Yusuf of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yusuf is seeking re-election with Murtala Garo as his running mate.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is fielding Abdussalam Aminu-Gwarzo, with Rabiu Mustapha as his running mate, while Dalha Muhammed-Bello is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate alongside Akibu Sarki-Adamu.
Ibrahim Ali-Amin is contesting under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with Shehu Abdulkadir-Bari as his running mate.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate is Muhammed Babayo-Abdullahi, who is paired with Zubairu Abdulkadir-Musa.
Santuraki Hamisu is the Labour Party (LP) candidate, with Ibrahim Abbas, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano, as his running mate.
Other parties participating in the contest include the African Democratic Party (ADP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), National Democratic Party (NDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Action Alliance (AA), African Action Congress (AAC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Action Peoples Party (APP), Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Accord Party (AP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The presence of Ahmad gives women a lone voice in a governorship contest featuring candidates from 19 political parties.
Her candidacy also places the issue of female representation in Kano’s top elective office in focus as the state heads towards the 2027 election.
