The Kano State House of Assembly has begun working on a bill to amend the law establishing the state’s Sharia Courts and the Sharia Court of Appeal, in order to resolve conflicts between the jurisdiction of these courts and that of magistrate courts.
The bill was presented by the Deputy Speaker and member representing Rimin Gado Constituency, Muhammad Bello Butu-Butu, who said it is time to update the law to align with modern judicial standards.
According to him, since the establishment of the Sharia Courts in Kano State in 2000, some sections of the law have remained inadequate, leading to confusion in the administration of justice.
“We must amend the law to clearly define the jurisdictions of the Sharia Courts and magistrate courts to prevent conflicts or misunderstandings between them,” Butu-Butu stated.
