Kano ASUU demands ABU VC’s removal, rejects appointment process

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano (YUMSFUEK), has called for the immediate removal of Professor Ahmad Adamu, who serves as both the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and Chairman of YUMSFUEK’s Governing Council.

In a strongly worded petition addressed to the Minister of Education, Dr. Marauf Tunji Alausa, and made public on Sunday in Kano, ASUU alleged that Professor Adamu’s dual roles create a significant conflict of interest and have stalled the university’s development and transition process.

The petition, jointly signed by ASUU Chairman Dr. Bashir Ibrahim and five other members, also rejected the council’s alleged plan to appoint a new Vice Chancellor without following due process, and its move to reinstall Dr. Sadi Mohammed Sirajo as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor.

ASUU accused the Governing Council of violating the Federal Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act by excluding statutory members representing the University Senate, Congregation, and Convocation.

The union described the VC selection process as a deliberate attempt to install a preselected candidate through illegitimate means.

“The entire process was a charade orchestrated by a compromised Governing Council that excluded key stakeholders and acted in bad faith,” the union stated.

“It’s a gross violation of the law and renders all decisions taken by the Council null and void.”

ASUU further criticized Professor Adamu’s leadership, claiming he has demonstrated “a clear lack of competence, foresight, and impartiality” in managing YUMSFUEK’s affairs.

“His primary allegiance remains with ABU, not YUMSFUEK,” the union stated, adding that under his leadership, the Council had become secretive, biased, and dismissive of proper procedures.

“His continued role as Council Chairman is a direct threat to the university’s stability and progress,” ASUU said.

The union also accused outgoing Acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Sirajo of exceeding his legal tenure, obstructing institutional upgrades, misleading the Council, and preparing to punish dissenters who oppose his continued stay in office.

ASUU demanded the immediate removal of Professor Ahmad Adamu as Council Chairman, the reconstitution of the Governing Council to include all statutory representatives such as the Senate, Congregation, host community, and alumni, a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities with appropriate sanctions for those involved, and the restoration of all withheld promotions, allowances, and entitlements.

The union insists that without urgent government intervention, the university’s transition and integrity remain at risk.
