Kano divided as Sanusi, Bayero, Kwankwaso hold separate Eid prayers

Kano State witnessed an unusual and symbolic break from tradition as three separate Eid-el-Fitr prayers were held across the city, underscoring deepening divisions among its traditional and political leadership.

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground at about 8:00 a.m., alongside top government officials including Governor Abba Yusuf, Secretary to the State Government Umar Faruq, and Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

The sermon focused on unity and peaceful coexistence.

At the same time, the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, held a separate prayer at the Nasarawa Palace, led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa.

According to his spokesperson, the gathering emphasized peace and stability, with notable attendees including Baffa Babba Dan Agundi and Usman Alhaji.

In a parallel development, Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, observed Eid prayers at his residence along Miller Road.

He was joined by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo and other political allies in what aides described as a moment of reflection and gratitude.

The rare occurrence of multiple Eid congregations highlights lingering tensions in Kano, rooted in the emirate crisis that began in 2020 with the removal of Sanusi II and installation of Bayero, followed by Sanusi’s reinstatement in 2024—creating parallel traditional authorities.

Political shifts, including Governor Yusuf’s recent move from the NNPP to the APC, have further widened the divide.

Traditionally, Eid prayers in Kano were held as a unified event at Kofar Mata Eid Ground, bringing together the Emir, political leaders, and residents.

The latest development marks a significant departure from that long-standing practice, reflecting growing fractures within the state’s leadership.
