Kano fire service responds to 80 emergencies, records 13 deaths in May

The Kano State Fire Service says it recorded 58 fire outbreaks and 13 deaths across the state in May 2026, as emergency responders handled dozens of incidents involving fires, accidents and rescue operations.

The agency disclosed this in its monthly operational report released on Monday through its spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

Speaking on the report, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, said the agency responded to 80 emergency calls between May 1 and May 31.

A breakdown of the incidents showed that 58 were fire outbreaks, 15 were rescue operations, while seven were false alarms.

Anas explained that the fatalities recorded during the month stemmed from various incidents, including fire disasters, road traffic crashes and accidents involving ponds and wells.

He, however, noted that firefighters and rescue personnel were able to save 34 people from life-threatening situations during the period under review.

The Director further revealed that fires destroyed properties valued at over ₦144 million, while the prompt intervention of emergency responders prevented the loss of assets worth approximately ₦437 million.

He attributed the success to the swift response of fire service personnel and urged residents to be more conscious of safety measures to reduce the occurrence of preventable incidents.

Anas called on the public to exercise caution when handling electrical appliances, cooking equipment and other potential fire hazards, stressing that adherence to safety guidelines remains key to preventing disasters.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Fire Service to safeguarding lives and property through effective emergency response, public enlightenment campaigns and proactive fire prevention measures across the state.
