Kano journalist Ibrahim Dan’uwa Rano regains freedom after detention

Kano-based journalist Ibrahim Dan’uwa Rano has been released from police custody following his arrest and detention at the Zonal Police Headquarters in Kano over alleged defamation.

Rano’s release came after mounting pressure and public outcry from rights organizations, including the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Amnesty International, and several other civil society groups, who condemned his detention as illegal and a direct attack on press freedom.

The groups had earlier called for his immediate and unconditional release, describing the journalist’s arrest as a violation of his constitutional rights and an attempt to intimidate the media.

CITAD and Amnesty International maintained that such actions undermine democracy and urged authorities to respect journalists’ rights to free expression and lawful reporting.
