A 30-year-old man has died after entering a well to recover a burning gas cylinder in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the service’s Emergency Response Unit received a distress call on Sunday about a rescue situation at Saulawa Quarters in Gwarzo town.
The Gwarzo Fire Service branch was immediately deployed after a resident, Alhaji Dan Gwarzo, alerted authorities that a man had gone down into a well during the emergency.
The victim, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, reportedly entered the well in an attempt to remove a gas cylinder that had been thrown inside while still on fire.
Officials explained that the cylinder released gas, which displaced oxygen within the confined space, leading to suffocation.
Firefighters pulled Ubale out of the well unconscious, but he was later pronounced dead.
His body was handed over to PC Muhammad Zakiyyu of the Gwarzo Police Division.
The Fire Service extended condolences to the victim’s family and advised residents to avoid entering wells or other confined spaces without proper safety precautions, warning that such environments can be extremely dangerous.
In a related development, the agency also noted recent drowning incidents in the state.
An 18-year-old, Yusif Malam-Gwani, drowned in an open water body in Ungogo Local Government Area, while an eight-year-old boy, Abdussalam Ibrahim, reportedly fell into a well in Karaye Local Government Area.
