Lawmakers from Kano South Senatorial District on Monday held what they described as a “critical meeting” to review their political future amid rising dissatisfaction with the leadership style of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The meeting, convened by Senator Kawu Sumaila in his Abuja office, drew several prominent members of the House of Representatives, including Alhassan Doguwa, Kabiru Rurum, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Abdullahi Rogo.
It came barely 24 hours after Senator Sumaila and Mr Rurum shunned an invitation by Governor Yusuf to attend an enlarged meeting with APC members of the State and National Assembly—a move widely interpreted as a sign of deepening cracks within the party hierarchy in Kano.
Sources familiar with Monday’s gathering said the lawmakers held extensive deliberations on the political direction of Kano South, expressing frustration over what they described as the zone’s “growing neglect” by the state government. The legislators allegedly accused the governor and his inner circle of making key decisions affecting their district without proper consultation.
“We are in touch with serving and former lawmakers, as well as former party leaders who were recently sidelined from our zone,” a source said. “We are also consulting businessmen, clerics and other stakeholders from Kano South to chart a new political course.”
Another insider, however, revealed that the aggrieved lawmakers are expected to meet Governor Yusuf later on Monday night to present their demands.
Although it remains uncertain whether the group is contemplating a defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signals from the meeting suggest they may take a firm stand against their current political structure if their grievances are not addressed.
