Kano to spend N1.5bn on mass wedding for 3,000 couples

The Kano State Government has approved N1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme that will cater to 3,000 couples across the state, with each bride set to receive a N100,000 capital grant to support the start of married life.

The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on preparations for the exercise, saying the fund would cover the purchase of furniture, food items, dowries, clothing materials and other logistics required for the programme.

“The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5 billion on the entire mass wedding programme, which will soon be conducted in the state,” Daurawa said.

He explained that the Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, had commenced medical screening for prospective couples to determine their health status, with tests covering hepatitis, HIV, genotype, pregnancy and other sexually transmitted diseases.

More than 5,000 people applied for the scheme, but only 3,000 couples will be selected after the completion of the screening process.

Daurawa said the exercise, which began on May 8, 2026, has so far covered intending couples drawn from 24 of the state’s 44 local government areas.

The Commander-General commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for initiating the programme and said the governor would announce the official date for the mass wedding.
