Fresh doubts have emerged over the effectiveness of peace negotiations with bandits in Katsina State after armed groups intimidated security operatives, government officials, and locals during a dialogue session.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Matazu Local Government Area, where community leaders, Islamic clerics, and notorious bandit groups gathered for peace talks facilitated by the state government.
Eyewitnesses said a notorious bandit leader arrived at the meeting heavily armed with Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), General Machine Guns (GMGs), and AK-47 rifles.
The display of such weapons sparked fear among residents, who have endured frequent attacks, kidnappings, and harassment from the criminal gangs.
Community leaders and clerics expressed dismay, describing the meeting as a contradiction to peace efforts.
“You came to a peace talk with AK-47 rifles, RPGs, and GMGs, and you return to the bush with the same weapons. How can this be called a peace deal?” one community leader lamented.
Critics noted that government and security representatives arrived unarmed, leaving them visibly unprepared in the face of the militants’ show of force.
Clerics and local authorities emphasized that genuine peace can only be achieved if all parties commit to disarmament and prioritize the protection of lives and property.
Residents further urged the government to adopt more decisive and practical measures to end the cycle of violence and ensure future negotiations yield lasting peace.
