The Kebbi State Government has rejected claims that it played any role in the ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation and detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris said petitions currently being probed by the EFCC against Malami did not originate from the state government.
He emphasised that the administration has no connection to the matter.
Malami was first invited by the EFCC on November 28 over issues tied to the recovery of Abacha loot during his tenure as AGF.
After an initial interrogation, he was granted administrative bail but later returned to the commission on December 8 and has remained in custody for failing to meet bail conditions.
His detention has coincided with his declaration of interest in the 2027 Kebbi State governorship election, prompting social media speculation that his ordeal was politically motivated, including alleged disputes between him and the state government over insecurity.
However, the governor’s spokesperson dismissed the assertions, saying Malami’s case predated the current administration and that the petitions were lodged from Abuja by some of his associates, not by the Kebbi government.
“Anybody who says the Kebbi State Government has a hand in Malami’s issue is mischievous,” he said.
