Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has criticised fans of popular music star Wizkid over what he described as repeated and disrespectful attempts to drag the name of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, into online music debates.
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Saturday, Seun cautioned Wizkid’s fan base, widely known as Wizkid FC, to stop invoking Fela’s name in arguments, accusing them of ignorance and deliberate provocation.
“Keep Fela’s name out of your (Wizkid FC) mouths. Why must you always find a way to bring Fela into your discussions?” he said.
Seun argued that branding any contemporary artiste as a “new Fela” showed a poor understanding of his father’s legacy, noting that such comparisons often fall apart when subjected to scrutiny.
“You try to take the man’s legacy and claim your artiste is the new Fela. When you realise the shoes are too big to fill, you then turn around,” he said, adding that the perceived disrespect stemmed from ignorance rather than defiance.
The musician also blamed toxic fan culture for fuelling unnecessary rivalry in the entertainment industry, urging fans to focus on appreciating music instead of stirring conflict online.
According to him, the inability to enjoy an artiste’s work without constant comparison reflects a lack of fulfilment and a craving for drama rather than genuine love for the art.
Seun further maintained that truly meaningful music should inspire reflection and calm, not endless social media battles and fan wars.
Recalling past clashes with Wizkid’s supporters, he said he had stood his ground before and would continue to do so, insisting that his father’s name should not be dragged into contemporary music rivalries.
He stressed that Fela’s legacy was not up for debate, noting that his family had consistently supported the music industry and welcomed other artistes through platforms such as the annual Felabration festival.
Seun concluded by warning fans to desist from invoking Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s name in fan arguments, insisting that the late Afrobeat legend deserved respect and should be allowed to rest.
