The Federal University Lokoja has unveiled a “Vice-Chancellor for a Day” initiative aimed at promoting leadership and academic excellence among students.
The Vice-Chancellor, Gbenga Ibileye, announced the programme in Lokoja as part of activities marking his first 100 days in office.
Ibileye, who assumed office on February 16, 2026 as the institution’s fourth Vice-Chancellor, said the initiative would confer symbolic leadership of the university on outstanding students.
“The ‘Vice-Chancellor for a Day’ initiative is designed to celebrate academic excellence and demonstrate our administration’s commitment to investing in students,” he said.
Reviewing his administration’s achievements, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted progress in research, innovation, and funding, including the attraction of about N3 billion in support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
He also announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences, aimed at positioning the university as a hub for advanced research, postgraduate training, and high-level skills development.
Ibileye further disclosed that the institution secured full accreditation from the National Universities Commission for eight academic programmes, including Mass Communication, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Sociology.
On infrastructure, he noted improvements at the Felele Permanent Campus, including the renovation of sanitation facilities and expansion of water supply through refurbished and newly constructed boreholes.
The Vice-Chancellor added that the university’s Vision Plan 2026–2031 has reached the White Paper stage and is awaiting formal approval by the Governing Council.
He also revealed that the pioneer students of the College of Health Sciences have successfully completed their basic medical examinations and advanced to clinical training, positioning them to become the first set of medical doctors trained entirely within Kogi State.
