Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing the need for political realignment ahead of future national engagements.
Kwankwaso, in a statement issued on Sunday, March 29, 2026, said his decision followed careful consideration of the evolving political landscape in Nigeria, noting that a new platform would provide a better opportunity to pursue national transformation.
The NNPP presidential candidate in the 2023 general election expressed appreciation to the party leadership for the opportunity to serve as its National Leader.
He also thanked the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders for their support.
Kwankwaso said: “I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.
“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
Kwankwaso also commended members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty and dedication, describing their commitment as instrumental to the party’s growth.
Despite his departure, the former governor stressed the importance of continued cooperation among political actors to achieve a more prosperous Nigeria, adding that efforts would be sustained to build a stronger and better future for the country.
