Kano

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former governor of Kano State, has urged current Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to resign as governor if he plans to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and pursue other political options.

Kwankwaso’s comments come amid rumours of a widening rift between him and his long-time protégé, Governor Yusuf — who is said to be considering a defection from the NNPP to another political party ahead of future elections.

Addressing supporters, Kwankwaso warned that Yusuf should not seek to retain his governorship while preparing to exit the party, suggesting that stepping down first would be the proper course of action.

His remarks highlight tensions within the NNPP and uncertainty about the governor’s political direction.

Political observers say the dispute is intensifying debates over loyalty, leadership and succession within the party in Kano, a key battleground ahead of the 2027 general elections.
