Lagos court jails couple 14 years each for N67.6m property fraud

A Lagos State Special Offences Court has sentenced a couple, Harry Uyanwanne and Oluwakemi Odia, to 14 years’ imprisonment each for defrauding a petitioner of N67.6m in a property fraud.

Justice Mojisola Dada of the court sitting in Ikeja delivered the judgment on Monday, November 2, 2026, after finding the defendants guilty of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money by false pretence.

The judge also ordered the convicts to restitute N67,659,592 to the petitioner, Olusola Odemuyiwa.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which prosecuted the case through its Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, said the defendants were, however, discharged on the fourth count bordering on forgery.

According to the commission, the defendants allegedly conspired in 2010 to fraudulently sell a property at Plot 19, Muritala Mohammed Way, Ebute Meta, Oyingbo, Lagos, for N16m.

The property was said to belong to beneficiaries of the estate of late Dr Moshood Babatunde Odemuyiwa.

The prosecution alleged that the defendants falsely represented that they had the authority of the estate’s legitimate beneficiaries to sell the property.

The charge stated that the defendants made the false representation with the intention of defrauding the buyer.

At their arraignment, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecution counsel, Fadeke Giwa, called three witnesses and tendered several documents in evidence, while the defence called one witness.

Delivering her judgment, Justice Dada held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted the defendants.

The court sentenced them to three years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, one year for stealing and 10 years for obtaining money by false pretence, without an option of fine.

The judge also ordered that the sentence of the first defendant, Uyanwanne, be suspended until he is apprehended.

The EFCC said the case was prosecuted under the relevant provisions of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
