The Lagos State Government has announced a total ban on street trading, hawking, building of illegal structures on drainage setbacks, and the display of wares on walkways across the state.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the declaration in a statement on Friday, September 29, 2023.
Wahab stated that the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has been directed to strictly enforce compliance of the environmental sanitation laws.

The commissioner said the ban on street trading and hawking would help to curtail the nefarious activities of hawkers who disguise to rob motorists and also disrupt the free-flow of traffic on highways and streets.
The state government had earlier shut the Ladipo Market in the Mushin area of Lagos following several environmental offences, including reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non payment of waste bills, among others.
