Lagos govt diverts traffic on Independence Bridge for repairs

The Lagos State Government has diverted traffic on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as urgent repairs begin on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Osiyemi said asphalt works on the bridge would begin on Friday night and continue throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Osiyemi said the repairs would cover the inbound and outbound lanes, with traffic management measures introduced to minimise disruptions.

“Traffic management plans to help motorists navigate their movement during the repair works include partial closure of each section at a time, with a lane opened for motorists to access their destinations,” he stated.

The commissioner urged motorists to plan their journeys and use alternative routes to reach their destinations during the repair period.

Osiyemi added that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to manage traffic and minimise inconvenience.

“Motorists are implored to remain patient, obey traffic laws and cooperate fully with the interventions made available,” Osiyemi said.
