Lagos lawyer’s mother: I hawked oranges to train my daughter

The mother of a female lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, who was shot dead by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Drambi Vandi, in the Ajah area of Lagos State, has said she hawked oranges to train her to become a lawyer.

The Star had reported that ASP Vandi, attached to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, allegedly shot and killed Raheem on Christmas Day.

It was gathered that the lawyer, her sister, and other family members were returning from an outing in their car when the police officer tried to stop them.

The woman was said to have tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the ASP allegedly shot at her vehicle and the bullet hit her.

The Lagos-based lawyer was rushed to a hospital where she was confirmed dead.

Speaking on Tuesday when the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, visited the family’s residence in the Ajah area of Lagos, the mother of the slain lawyer said: “I cannot see my ‘The Law’ again. People usually call her ‘The Law’. She was taken away from me.

“She was pregnant with twins. She died with her glory. She left a five-year-old daughter behind and they took her away.

“On Monday, my granddaughter came to me and said ‘grandma Iju Ishaga, I saw you yesterday when you were crying. You were shouting; is it because of my mummy?

“I said ‘yes’. Then she came again and told me, Pastor Jerry said what God cannot do does not exist. So, grandma, stop crying. She kissed me on the cheek.

“Just like that, my daughter was taken away from me. Oluwagbenga (referring to the deceased’s husband), you won’t see your love. It is not easy.

“A child that I have been training since childhood. I suffered over her. I hawked oranges.

“There is nothing I did not do. Even her sister knows how I suffered to train her to become a lawyer. God, please fight this battle for me,” the woman, who wept uncontrollably, said.
