The Lagos State Government has sealed three supermarkets and eateries in the Kosofe area for breaching the state’s ban on single-use plastics, as part of intensified efforts to tackle plastic pollution and promote environmental sustainability.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this in a statement, naming the affected outlets as Winny Supermarket, Afia Supermarket at Tipper Garage in Ketu, and Beyond Tastee2Go Restaurant on Ogudu Road, Ojota.
He said the facilities were shut down after enforcement officers discovered and confiscated prohibited plastic materials on their premises.
Wahab explained that the enforcement drive followed the full implementation of the state’s ban on single-use plastics below 40 microns, which took effect on July 1, 2025.
The restriction covers items such as Styrofoam packs, lightweight nylon bags, plastic straws, disposable cups, and cutlery.
According to him, the clampdown aims to protect the environment from indiscriminate plastic waste that blocks drainage systems, worsens flooding, and endangers marine life.
He warned that the government would not hesitate to sanction more defaulters in other parts of the state.
“The enforcement will continue until all residents and businesses adopt eco-friendly alternatives that support a cleaner and healthier Lagos,” Wahab stated.
Environmental advocates have applauded the government’s move, describing it as a significant step toward achieving a circular economy and reducing carbon emissions from waste management.
