LG crisis: 2 security operatives killed in Rivers

Two security operatives have been confirmed dead in a crisis that broke out over the Local Government administration in Rivers State.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, directed heads of administration in the 23 Local Government Areas of the state to take over from the elected council chairmen whose three-year tenure elapsed on Monday.

21 of the 23 outgone chairmen insisted they would not hand over, leading to some heated moments in the state.

However, it was gathered that two security operatives, a policeman and a vigilante officer, were killed in the attack on the council headquarters at Eberi-Omuma in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday.

The incident was confirmed by the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko.

Rivers LG chairmen tackle Fubara as gov orders administrators’ takeover

The police spokesperson said investigations into the incident have commenced, adding that more details would be released soon.

Governor Fubara has also convened a security council meeting with heads of security agencies following the political crisis in the state.

The meeting was held behind closed doors at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Tuesday.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Fubara said discussions with the security heads centred on strategies to contain the invasion of local government secretariats.
