Libyan authorities have repatriated 80 Nigerian migrants from various detention centres as part of efforts to curb irregular migration and ease overcrowding in detention facilities.
According to Migrant Rescue Watch, the Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM), in collaboration with the Nigerian Consulate in Tripoli, facilitated the deportation via Mitiga International Airport.
The group included migrants transferred by the Judicial Police who had received judicial deportation orders.
“DCIM, with Nigerian consular support, repatriated 80 Nigerian migrants via Mitiga International Airport.
“The group includes individuals previously transferred under judicial orders,” the statement said.
It added that the move is part of ongoing measures by Libyan authorities and diplomatic missions to manage undocumented migrants and address human rights concerns in detention centres.
This follows a similar repatriation in 2024, when 369 Nigerians and Malians were deported from Libya.
Meanwhile, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reported that two Nigerians were rescued, while two others died after a vessel carrying 49 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.
The boat had departed from Zuwara, northwest Libya, on November 3.
These developments highlight the persistent risks faced by Nigerians attempting irregular migration through Libya.
