The Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding his formal resignation from the party following his involvement in a newly formed political coalition.
In a strongly worded statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party distanced itself from the coalition and accused its members of being “power mongers” with no genuine interest in building a better Nigeria.
Obi, who is believed to have officially aligned with the coalition, has been accused by the party of holding “nocturnal meetings” with Labour Party members in a bid to lure them into his new political fold. However, the party noted that some members have resisted the pressure to defect.
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party,” the statement said. “Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda or deceptive personas.”
The party warned that any of its members who continue to associate with the coalition must resign within 48 hours or face expulsion, reaffirming its position as a platform for a new political order driven by the youth.
“Nearly 70 percent of the Nigerian population are youths who are tired of the old order, tired of gerontocrats deciding their fate,” Ifoh stated. “The new Nigeria cannot be birthed by desperate and recycled politicians.”
The Labour Party also reiterated its commitment to building a credible alternative to the current political establishment and urged its members to stay loyal and maintain the party’s structure ahead of future elections.
“The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory,” the statement concluded.
