Makinde: Why I’m qualified to become Nigeria’s president

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has declared that he is qualified to serve as Nigeria’s president, amid growing speculation about his interest in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a media briefing in Ibadan on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Makinde cited his experience as a two-term governor and his professional background as an engineer and business leader as evidence of his readiness to lead the country.

The governor said: “Let me be very clear: I am qualified — in fact, overqualified — to serve Nigeria at the highest level.

“I have governed Oyo State effectively, and look at the current president — what brought him to the table? He was governor of Lagos State for two terms. By May 2027, God willing, I will have completed my full tenure as a two-term governor of Oyo State.”

Makinde also highlighted his corporate experience, noting that he ran a company at 29 while some of his peers were still completing their youth service.

“I worked for multinational oil companies, including Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron, without ever relying on NNPC or similar institutions,” he added.

While acknowledging that the 2027 elections are still over a year away, Makinde emphasised the need for a strong democracy and robust opposition parties.

The governor also criticised the recent defection of several governors and top politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such moves could undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress.
