Man City sack barman for wearing United jersey on derby day

Premier League side Manchester City have dismissed a bar worker at the Etihad Stadium after turning up for his shift wearing a Manchester United jersey on derby day.

City officials were made aware of the worker’s choice of shirt by angered home supporters on X (formerly Twitter).

Taking a picture of the staff member, who was wearing a United away strip from the 2018-19 season while pulling a pint, a City fan stated: “Absolute joke @ManCity – letting one of the bar staff in block 315 wear a United shirt on Derby Day.”

The complaint soon caught the attention of those in authority at the Etihad, who promptly removed the worker from his post.

Replying to the fan’s post, City wrote: “@Mataniels @ManCity Thank you for making us aware of this. We can confirm that this individual has now been removed from their position.”

The incident came before the beginning of Sunday’s Manchester derby, which started with a heartfelt tribute paid to Ricky Hatton.

The British boxer, a City supporter, was found dead at his home near Manchester on Sunday morning at the age of 46.

City thrashed United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with goals from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.
