A 50-year-old meat trader identified as Usman Abubakar is in police custody following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in the Angwan-Daji area of Niger State.

The incident reportedly occurred when the minor visited Abubakar’s shop to buy meat on behalf of his mother.

Upon the boy’s return home, his mother grew concerned after noticing he was visibly distressed, unable to sit comfortably, and had bruises on his lower body.

When she questioned him, the boy identified the neighbourhood meat seller as his abuser and described what had allegedly taken place at the shop.

The family subsequently reported the matter to the police, who swiftly moved in and arrested the suspect.

During interrogation, Abubakar reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting that he used roasted meat as bait to lure the child into his shop.

Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development, stating that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing. He added that the victim is receiving medical attention.

“The suspect was immediately arrested by police operatives attached to ‘A’ Division Minna, and during interrogation, he confessed to the crime,” Abiodun said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Elleman, condemned the assault in strong terms and pledged that the suspect would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

He also used the opportunity to urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take active steps to protect their children from predators in their communities.
