Mokwa flood: Niger govt awards N7bn road, 4 bridges project

he Niger State Government has awarded a N7 billion contract for the construction of a 12-kilometre road linking Mokwa to Rabba, in response to the recent flood disaster that claimed lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago disclosed this during an on-the-spot assessment and condolence visit to Mokwa, where he met with affected residents and inspected the damage caused by the flood.

The governor stated that the road project, which will commence immediately, includes the construction of four bridges to improve connectivity between the two communities and strengthen resilience against future disasters.

He directed relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to conduct a comprehensive survey of the state’s waterways and topography. The aim, he said, is to identify vulnerable settlements along coastal lines and initiate relocation plans to prevent future disasters.

Governor Bago urged residents to remain united and avoid divisive sentiments, especially during such challenging times. He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and welfare of all citizens.

As part of immediate relief efforts, the government symbolically distributed essential supplies to selected affected households in Mokwa.

The governor also visited Rabba to assess the damaged bridge, which was severed by the floodwaters. While there, he extended his sympathies to the local community and assured them of swift government intervention to restore access and rebuild infrastructure.
