Morocco tops Africa’s World Cup earnings with $58m haul

Morocco have emerged as Africa’s highest-earning national team across the last two FIFA World Cups after amassing a combined $58 million in prize money from the 2022 and 2026 tournaments.

The Atlas Lions received $31.5 million for reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to the $26.5 million they earned for their historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Their 2026 earnings included a $10 million participation fee, a $2.5 million preparation grant and $19 million in performance bonuses for advancing to the last eight.

Morocco’s latest performance further cemented their status as one of Africa’s most successful teams on the global stage, following their groundbreaking run to the semi-finals in Qatar, where they became the first African and Arab nation to reach that stage of the competition.

Their campaign at the 2026 World Cup ended on Thursday with a 2-0 quarter-final defeat to France, as goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele sent Les Bleus into the semi-finals.

France will now face Spain in the last four as they continue their quest for another World Cup title.

Among the other African representatives at the tournament, Egypt recorded the second-highest earnings after receiving $17.5 million for reaching the Round of 16.

Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Ghana each earned $13.5 million after their participation in the competition.
