Mother, daughter bag 6 months imprisonment for stealing litres of oil

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, convicted and sentenced a woman and her daughter to a term of six months imprisonment each, for stealing cooking oil.

The defendants are: Toyin Ojo, 57; and Esther Ojo, 23.

The police charged the duo on two-counts bordering on conspiracy and stealing of 25 litres of groundnut oil as well as 25 litres of palm oil.

They each pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Adesina Elijah, the convicts committed the offence on February 25, at 01:30 p.m. at the Garage Olode and Garage Olode, Ifetedo.

He told the court that the duo conspired to steal 25 litres of groundnut oil and 25 litres of palm oil belonging to a complainant one Olasunkanmi Adikat.

He said that the oil is valued at N96,000.

The offences contravene the provision of sections 383, 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Law of Osun State, 2002.

In his judgement, the Magistrate, Mr Taofeek Badmus, convicted and sentenced the convicts to a term of six months imprisonment on each count.

He, however, gave them an option of N25,000 fine on each of the counts.

The court held that the sentence shall run concurrently.
