A pedestrian has been left critically injured after being struck by an unidentified motorist in a hit-and-run crash at Ojota, Lagos State.
The incident occurred over the weekend along the main carriageway from Ketu towards Ojota, where the motorist allegedly hit the pedestrian and fled the scene.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
According to him, LASTMA officers who arrived at the scene secured the area, managed traffic and took measures to protect the injured pedestrian and other road users.
The victim was reportedly found lying in a pool of blood with multiple traumatic injuries, including severe fractures and head injuries.
Taofiq said the victim was still alive and breathing when LASTMA officers arrived but was in critical condition and required urgent specialised medical attention.
The officers subsequently contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), whose medical team arrived at the scene to assess the victim.
Following the assessment, the medical personnel reportedly determined that the severity of the injuries required treatment at a facility equipped to provide comprehensive trauma care.
LASTMA officers remained at the scene while efforts were made to secure further emergency medical assistance for the victim.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the alleged decision of the motorist to flee the scene, describing it as irresponsible and reprehensible.
Bakare-Oki said motorists involved in road crashes have a legal and moral responsibility to stop, assess the situation, contact emergency responders and provide reasonable assistance to injured persons where possible.
“The decision by a motorist to flee the scene of a crash, particularly where another person has sustained life-threatening injuries, is deeply reprehensible and could have devastating consequences,” he said.
He urged members of the public to promptly alert emergency agencies whenever they witness road crashes and cooperate with responders.
The LASTMA boss commended the officers who responded to the incident for their professionalism and commitment to saving lives.
He also appealed to eyewitnesses, motorists and other members of the public with credible information that could help identify the fleeing driver to provide such information to law enforcement authorities.
The incident comes months after another hit-and-run-related crash along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos, where a heavily loaded bucket truck was reportedly involved in a fatal accident that killed a pedestrian and a motorcyclist.
The earlier incident occurred around the Iyana-Iba Flyover, inward the main gate of Lagos State University.
According to preliminary findings, the truck driver was allegedly speeding from Volkswagen towards Badagry when the vehicle struck a pedestrian. The driver reportedly continued driving instead of stopping.
A motorcyclist, accompanied by another person, reportedly pursued the fleeing truck in an attempt to stop the driver. The truck later allegedly collided with the motorcycle, killing the rider, while the second occupant escaped unhurt.
The driver was subsequently apprehended.
