NAF acquires three new helicopters to boost security operations

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has acquired three AgustaWestland A109 Trekker Type B helicopters to strengthen surveillance, air mobility and military operations against insecurity across the country.

The aircraft, identified as NAF 586, NAF 587 and NAF 588, were formally accepted at the 355 Rotary Wing facility in Ikeja, Lagos, on October 6, 2026.

Air Commodore E. Akintunde, Commander of the 643 Equipment Supply Depot, represented the Chief of Logistics at the acceptance ceremony.

According to the Air Force, the helicopters were reassembled by its technicians in collaboration with AgustaWestland technical partners, highlighting efforts to strengthen local technical expertise and improve aircraft maintenance capabilities.

The development forms part of the service’s fleet modernisation programme under the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.

The NAF said the initiative was aimed at building a more capable and mission-ready force to support joint military operations and enhance national security.

The addition of the helicopters is expected to strengthen the Air Force’s operational capacity, particularly in surveillance and air mobility missions supporting security operations.
