The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has constituted an investigation team to probe the reported killing of two residents and the injury of six others, including children, during an air operation against bandits in Niger State.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Kurigi community, Mariga Local Government Area. Residents said a military surveillance helicopter hovered over the area for several minutes before opening fire, with gunshots reportedly hitting people inside their homes.
A resident, Suleiman Sanusi, said the incident sparked fear and panic, forcing many villagers to flee to Bangi town and other nearby locations considered safer. He described the attack as unprovoked and called on authorities to urgently investigate the matter and provide medical care for the injured.
Reacting on Tuesday, the Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the investigation was in line with the service’s principles of accountability, responsibility and transparency.
In a statement titled “NAF Reaffirms Commitment to Civilian Protection Following Reported Incident in Kurigi, Niger State,” Ejodame said the Air Force had noted reports of civilian casualties arising from air operations conducted on January 25, 2026.
“The Nigerian Air Force acknowledges the gravity of the reported loss of lives and injuries and conveys its deep concern for all affected,” the statement read, adding that the protection of civilians remains central to NAF’s operations.
Ejodame noted that over the past year, the NAF has consistently implemented its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan, integrating civilian protection measures into all stages of operations while strengthening training and safeguards to minimise harm.
He disclosed that a Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team has been activated to carry out a comprehensive probe into the incident.
“The NAF assures Nigerians of its unwavering resolve to take responsibility where required, implement necessary improvements and safeguard innocent lives, while continuing to defend the nation with professionalism, restraint and respect for public trust,” the statement added.
