The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has distanced itself from a list circulating on social media that purports to identify fake, adulterated or substandard products in the Nigerian market.
In a press release dated 9 October 2026 and signed by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency said the list did not originate from it and should not be treated as an official regulatory alert, recall notice or safety communication.
NAFDAC said it does not declare any product fake, adulterated or unsafe without following due regulatory processes, including investigation, sampling and, where necessary, scientific and laboratory verification.
It added that official alerts are specific and verifiable, and are issued through its established communication channels with details of the affected product and the regulatory action required.
The agency advised members of the public to disregard the viral list and avoid sharing or amplifying the unverified information.
NAFDAC warned that such misinformation can cause unnecessary public concern and unfairly damage the reputation and business interests of legitimate manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
It stressed that the appearance of a product name or photograph on a social media list does not amount to an official finding that the product is fake or unsafe.
The agency explained that its Public Alerts serve as a reference for consumers, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to identify products that need regulatory attention and avoid potential harm.
Where necessary, it said, NAFDAC issues alerts, conducts market surveillance and mops up affected products for regulatory action, including destruction. It added that it will continue to take enforcement action whenever investigations and scientific assessments show that intervention is required.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians and other stakeholders to rely on its official channels for accurate information on product alerts, recalls, withdrawals, suspensions and other regulatory actions.
For enquiries, the agency asked the public to call 0700-1-NAFDAC (0700-1-623322). Complaints can be lodged on 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322) or by email to [email protected].
