NAFDAC seals Kano shops, arrests six over illegal bleaching creams

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed multiple shops and arrested six individuals in Sabon Gari, Kano, over the illegal sale and distribution of harmful skin-bleaching creams.

Kano State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Kasim Ibrahim, made the disclosure during a press briefing on Tuesday, stating that the operation followed complaints from the public via social media and a directive from the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

“Based on public outcry and intelligence gathered through discreet surveillance and mystery shopping, we uncovered unapproved bleaching products being sold under the guise of beauty spa treatments,” Ibrahim said.

He revealed that the products contained hazardous substances and were being distributed without regulatory approval. The raid, conducted in collaboration with NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, led to the arrest of six suspects, sample collection for laboratory analysis, and sealing of the affected shops.

Additionally, other businesses found to be faking registered cosmetic products or violating safety standards were also shut down pending further investigation.

Ibrahim emphasized that NAFDAC remains committed to its mandate of protecting public health through strict oversight of regulated products, including cosmetics.

“These illegal activities posed significant health risks to consumers. We acted to prevent a potential public health crisis,” he said.

He urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the agency, adding, “If you see something, say something.”

Ibrahim also thanked the media for their ongoing support in promoting public awareness and reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
