Nagelsmann resigns as Germany coach after World Cup exit as Klopp sets to take over

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as the head coach of Germany, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ready to replace him.

Nagelsmann held talks with officials from the German Football Association on Thursday following their shock World Cup last-32 exit against Paraguay.

Those discussions have resulted in Nagelsmann deciding to step down.

Sky Sports reported that Klopp is ready to take over the national team if approached.

The former Liverpool boss is currently head of global soccer for Red Bull Group, but his current contract includes a special exit clause for the Germany job.

Nagelsmann, 38, took charge of Germany in September 2023 and guided the nation to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they were beaten by eventual winners Spain.

Germany were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup by Paraguay on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after extra-time in Boston. They had topped Group E on goal difference after thrashing newcomers Curacao 7-1 in their opening game and beating Cote d’Ivoire 2-1, before a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador.
