The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the management of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, to reconsider the suspension of students sanctioned over their alleged involvement in a campus fight.
In a statement signed by the National Treasurer of NANS, Comrade Asmawu Idris Omeiza, the student body condemned violence and all forms of misconduct in tertiary institutions but urged the university to adopt a more compassionate approach in handling the disciplinary case.
NANS expressed concern over reports that some female students were handed one-year suspensions, arguing that while discipline is necessary, sanctions should also consider their long-term impact on the academic and future prospects of the affected students.
The association said disciplinary measures should be lawful, proportionate and aimed at correcting erring students rather than causing undue disruption to their education, particularly if they are first-time offenders.
“Without seeking to excuse acts of indiscipline or undermine the authority of the university, we respectfully appeal to the management to temper justice with mercy by considering alternative disciplinary measures that will serve the objectives of correction and deterrence without causing undue disruption to the academic pursuits and future aspirations of the students,” the statement read.
NANS said it was ready to engage with the university management to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and to advocate for what it described as a fair, balanced and compassionate resolution.
According to the association, its intervention is motivated by its commitment to the welfare of Nigerian students and the belief that discipline should be accompanied by fairness, equity and opportunities for rehabilitation.
The student body called on the university authorities to review the disciplinary action in the interest of justice and compassion.
It also urged the affected students and the wider student community to remain calm, respect the institution’s disciplinary processes and continue to uphold peace, discipline and responsible conduct.
NANS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the legitimate interests of Nigerian students while promoting an academic environment built on order, mutual respect and constructive engagement.
