The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has destroyed contraband items seized from inmates across custodial centres nationwide, as part of efforts to strengthen security and enforce prison regulations.
The service said the items were recovered during routine cell searches and intelligence-led operations conducted in various facilities. Recovered materials included mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, hard drugs, power banks, and other prohibited items.
According to officials, such items are banned within correctional centres because they pose security risks and could undermine rehabilitation programmes designed for inmates.
The destruction exercise, carried out at the service’s headquarters, was in line with operational guidelines that require the disposal of confiscated contraband.
Authorities explained that the move is aimed at deterring smuggling, maintaining discipline among inmates, and ensuring that custodial centres remain secure and focused on reform.
The NCoS also reaffirmed its commitment to sustained nationwide searches, stressing that eliminating prohibited items is essential to improving correctional standards and supporting the broader goal of rehabilitating inmates for successful reintegration into society.
