NDLEA seizes 5,851kg cannabis, arrests 45-year-old cripple

The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have seized no fewer than 5,851.3 kilograms (5.8 tons) of Cannabis Sativa from dealers, including a 45-year-old notorious cripple, Ibrahim Yusuf, at Gasline, Ifo, Ogun State.

Yusuf was arrested on Monday with 4kg of psychotropic substance.

The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this via a statement issued on Sunday.

Babafemi said a total of 36 bags weighing 570kg of psychotropic substance were recovered in another raid at a forest in Ogunmakin, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He noted that the NDLEA operatives evacuated 141 bags of cannabis with a gross weight of 1,884 kg (1.884 tons) stored in a warehouse in Okpe forest, Akoko Edo LGA of Edo State on Monday.

He stated that the NDLEA officers also arrested a 50-year-old man, Ismaila Abubakar, at Okada junction, Ovia South West LGA of Edo State with 22 bags of C/S weighing 216.5kg on Thursday.

The NDLEA spokesman added that the anti-narcotics officers seized 112 bags of C/S stored in Obi Camp forest, Ovia South West LGA weighing 1,512kg.

“This was also followed by another seizure of 45 bags that weighed 529.5kg, while officers equally intercepted a Toyota Sienna bus with Reg. No. BDG 598 FZ (Lagos) loaded with 566.5kg cannabis going to Onitsha, Anambra State, and a suspect, Sunday Mathias, 30, arrested with the seizure,” Babafemi noted.

He disclosed that the NDLEA operatives stormed Oke-Ogun forest in Ondo State on Friday and arrested one Onyebuchi Chime with 88kg cannabis, a gun, and some ammunition, adding that the anti-narcotics officers also recovered 149.5kg of the substance at Ipele forest.

“Not less than 12.42 hectares of cannabis farms were destroyed and 195kg processed weeds of the substance recovered at Efon Alaye, Ekiti state where two dealers: Richard Ebong and Nze Abraham were arrested on Saturday 26th November,” the spokesperson of the anti-drug agency added.

Speaking on the arrests and seizures, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the officers of the agency for their professionalism in the discharge of their duties and the remarkable results that followed.

Marwa enjoined them and their compatriots across the country not to let down their guards as the nation approaches the festive season.
