The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved N100 billion for the rehabilitation of training institutions belonging to the police and other security agencies, subject to President Bola Tinubu’s final ratification.

The decision followed recommendations from an ad-hoc committee set up to evaluate the condition of security training facilities nationwide.

At its 154th meeting held virtually on Wednesday, NEC also approved N2.6 billion for consultancy services for the project.

The initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s earlier proposal for a nationwide overhaul of security training institutions.

Presenting the committee’s findings, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah said many facilities were in dire condition, underscoring the need for urgent intervention.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chaired the meeting, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening security institutions and urged state governments to ensure that economic reforms translate into measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.

The Council also reviewed updates on national finances, polio eradication efforts and domestic gas supply.

Nigeria’s Excess Crude Account stood at $525,823.39 as of November, while the Stabilization Account and Natural Resources Development Fund held N71.6 billion and N79.2 billion respectively.

On polio, NEC noted a 39% reduction in circulating variant poliovirus type 2 cases, with Kano and Katsina recording significant declines.

It endorsed intensified vaccination campaigns across northern states beginning this month.

The Minister of Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, briefed the Council on domestic gas availability and outstanding debts to gas producers.

NEC approved the settlement of ₦185 billion previously validated as owed to gas suppliers, following President Tinubu’s directive that the payments be made through future royalty deductions.
