The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday presided over the FCT Executive Committee Meeting, where key decisions were taken to overhaul waste management across the territory.
Speaking after the meeting, the Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, announced that a new waste management regime will commence on Monday, November 17, 2025, as part of efforts to ensure a cleaner and more orderly capital city.
Obuah said the Committee approved a memo introducing new waste collection contractors across the FCT, as well as the procurement of basic treatment plants and supervisory utility vehicles for effective service delivery.
“We have received numerous complaints about poor waste disposal.
“This new regime will correct those lapses and give residents a cleaner Abuja,” Obuah stated.
In the same vein, the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), led by Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, disclosed that the Committee ratified the payment of ₦111.9 million for the emergency evacuation of waste from open dumps, waterways, and streams in Dogon Gada, a community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
Also speaking, the FCT Secretary of Transportation, Hon. Chinedum Elechi, announced the Committee’s approval for printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS), as well as the maintenance of 34 existing traffic lights and the installation of three new ones within the city.
Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, reiterated Wike’s commitment to maintaining environmental cleanliness and transforming Abuja into a world-class city.
“The Minister is very particular about waste management because it directly affects the cleanliness and image of the city,” Amadi said.
The new waste management policy is expected to strengthen sanitation enforcement, improve waste collection efficiency, and enhance the overall environmental outlook of the Federal Capital Territory.
