NHRC, KCSF investigate alleged killings at Kano APC guber primaries

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Kano Civil Societies Forum (KCSF) have inaugurated a committee to investigate the alleged killings of supporters of All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant during the gubernatorial primary election in Kano State.

APC governorship aspirant, Sha’aban Sharada, alleged that three of his supporters were killed while others were injured at the venue of the primary election held in the state last Thursday.

Sharada, who currently represents Kano Municipal Constituency in the House of Representatives, contested against Governor Ganduje-backed Nasiru Gawuna.

The 11-man committee will be co-chaired by Kano NHRC Coordinator, Shehu Abdullahi and KCSF President, Ibrahim Waiya.

Speaking at the inauguration of the committee, the NHRC Coordinator said: “We are inaugurating this committee to speed up the investigation over the alleged killing of three people. Kano is a peaceful state that now faces a lot of crises.

“We will engage law enforcement agencies to investigate the killings and possibly prosecute the perpetrators.”

According to KCSF President, the committee would conclude its investigation and make its findings available in three weeks.

Waiya noted: “As concerned citizens of Nigeria, who believe in the importance of peace, and therefore conscious of the need to be proactive rather than reactive, to checkmate and mitigate all potential threats to the peace and security of Kano State, especially as the 2023 elections activities have commenced in earnest.

“In addition to this, to further sensitize the Kano citizens on the dangers of political violence, and to ensure that all kinds of wanton killings are stopped before full-blown Nigeria: General Election come 2023.”

The two organisations, therefore, agreed to establish a joint public hearing committee and to provide an avenue for the members of the general public to submit their written or oral submissions regarding the incident.

Kano State Police Command had earlier said no person was killed at the governorship primaries, saying its operatives monitored the exercise to the end.
