As part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled two flagship health initiatives—the free distribution of Mother–Baby Kits and the Abuja Breathe Fresh Air Project.
FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, launched the programmes at the Asokoro District Hospital in Abuja, describing them as a holistic vision of health that protects mothers and newborns during childbirth while tackling household air pollution.
The Mother–Baby Kits, she explained, contain essential medical supplies to support safe labour, delivery, and neonatal care. “No woman should face childbirth without the tools and support she needs, and no child should begin life without adequate care,” Mahmoud said.
The Abuja Breathe Fresh Air Project, on the other hand, aims to reduce indoor air pollution by replacing firewood, charcoal, and kerosene with efficient LPG cookers. According to the Minister, the initiative addresses one of the “silent but deadly” health risks in homes—respiratory diseases caused by smoke inhalation.
“These programmes are part of a broader transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” she noted, adding that investments in workforce training, infrastructure upgrades, and the establishment of a Public Health Emergency Operations Centre have strengthened healthcare delivery in the FCT.
Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, stressed that Nigeria still faces high maternal and infant mortality rates due to lack of access to clean and essential delivery supplies. “The Renewed Hope Mother–Baby Kit initiative is designed to bridge that gap,” she said.
The event also featured free distribution of baby kits and cooking gas to pregnant women, with several dignitaries in attendance, including Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, Adedayo Benjamin Laniyi, Permanent Secretary Health Services, Dr. Baba-Gana Adams, and other top FCTA officials.
