Nigeria has won the right to host the 2028 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Championships after defeating Tunisia in a vote at the continental body’s Annual General Meeting in Tangier, Morocco.
Nigeria secured 23 votes against Tunisia’s 15, earning Lagos the opportunity to host Africa’s leading table tennis players in 2028.
The result followed presentations by both countries at the meeting, where 38 votes were cast, including 31 by delegates present and seven through authorised proxies.
President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Adesoji Tayo, welcomed the decision, thanking delegates and member associations for backing the country’s bid.
He assured the continental body that Nigeria would deliver a successful competition and provide a memorable experience for players, officials and spectators.
“We want to thank all the delegates for placing their trust in Nigeria to host both the 2028 African Championships and the 2027 African Para Championships,” Tayo said.
He added that Nigeria’s experience in organising major international table tennis events would help ensure a smooth tournament.
“Lagos will once again welcome the continent’s finest players, and we assure all visitors that Nigeria will be the place to be in 2028,” he said.
The latest victory adds to Nigeria’s continental hosting commitments, with the country also scheduled to stage the 2027 African Para Championships.
At the AGM, the ITTF Africa confirmed several other hosts for its 2027 and 2028 competitions.
Libya will host the 2027 Africa Cup, while Algeria will stage the 2027 African Championships and Botswana the Youth Championships.
For 2028, Rwanda was selected to host the Youth Championships, while Egypt will organise the Para Championships. The host of the 2028 Africa Cup is yet to be announced.
Nigeria’s successful bid is expected to bring leading African players and officials to Lagos, providing an opportunity to showcase the country’s capacity to organise major international sporting events.
