Nigeria records lowest electricity tariff among 15 African countries

Nigeria had the lowest average electricity tariff among 15 selected African countries in 2025, according to data attributed to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and TheCable Index.

The data put Nigeria’s average electricity tariff at ₦124.30 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), significantly below the other countries surveyed.

Mauritius ranked second at ₦191.75/kWh, followed by Ivory Coast at ₦207.98/kWh and Namibia at ₦227.15/kWh.

Uganda recorded an average tariff of ₦238.95/kWh, while Rwanda and Ghana followed with ₦258.13/kWh and ₦265.50/kWh respectively.

Senegal ranked eighth at ₦286.15/kWh, while Gabon and Togo recorded the same average tariff of ₦321.55/kWh.

Burkina Faso had an average tariff of ₦323.03/kWh, followed by Kenya at ₦327.45/kWh and Mali at ₦342.20/kWh.

Sierra Leone recorded ₦373.18/kWh, while South Africa had the highest average tariff among the countries surveyed at ₦399.73/kWh.

The figures show that Nigeria’s average tariff was about 69 per cent lower than South Africa’s, the highest among the 15 countries listed.

The comparison comes amid continued debate over electricity pricing, affordability and the cost of power across African countries.
