Nigerian elites responsible for insecurity, says Plateau governor

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has attributed Nigeria’s persistent security challenges to the actions and influence of the country’s elite.

Speaking in Jos during a stakeholder forum titled “Dialogue on Community Policing as a Panacea for Insecurity in Nigeria: The Case of Plateau State,” Mutfwang asserted that insecurity is largely an elite-driven problem.

“My theory is that more than anyone else, the challenges of insecurity in Nigeria are created by the elites,” he said. “When the elites conspire to mislead the people, we will continue to face these recurring crises.”

He accused some elite individuals of fueling communal hatred through divisive rhetoric and misinformation. However, he stressed that the same elite class holds the power to end the crisis if they commit to purposeful and patriotic leadership.

“Even when tension starts at the grassroots, if the elites take decisive steps to end it, it can be resolved. But when they promote hate and spread poisonous narratives, it only deepens the crisis,” Mutfwang added.

The governor called on influential Nigerians to take responsibility for shaping public discourse toward peace and unity. He emphasized the need for sincere, informed contributions from the elite in addressing national security issues.

Reaffirming his commitment to unity and peace in Plateau State, Mutfwang vowed to continue dismantling religious and ethnic divisions.

“I came into office determined to restore lasting peace to Plateau. I have made conscious efforts to bridge our divides. Despite recent criticisms from certain quarters, I can boldly say that I have done more than any governor since 1999 to promote peace and unity in the state,” he said.
