Nigerian filmmaker Moshood Abiola Obatula, popularly known as Director Mosh, is earning acclaim once again with his latest film, Agemo, which continues to gain attention both locally and internationally.

The film has emerged as a strong representation of the ongoing shift within the African film industry — a shift that has seen more indigenous filmmakers reclaiming their narratives and telling authentic African stories from within the continent. Agemo is one such story, a “for us, by us” production that highlights the depth and creativity emerging from Nigeria’s film scene.

Staying true to his moniker, “The Dark Visionary,” Director Mosh infuses Agemo with supernatural and mystical elements that serve as more than just spectacle. Over four months of production, the film explores complex themes such as womanhood, resilience, the consequences of unseen forces, hidden truths, and the dynamics of power and influence — all woven into a richly layered and thought-provoking narrative.

Agemo has already secured multiple accolades. It received an official selection at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF), following two nominations at the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) in March 2025. The film’s awards journey began in 2024 with a selection at the Red Movie Awards, an Honourable Mention at the Amsterdam International Awards, and a notable nomination at the 13th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF).

Much of Agemo’s success lies in its meticulous production quality and compelling performances, guided by Director Mosh’s collaborative and actor-focused approach. Known for fostering honest communication and mutual trust on set, Obatula encourages his cast to engage deeply with their characters — examining emotional layers, backstories, and motivations — to deliver powerful, authentic portrayals.

“I believe that open collaboration with actors strengthens the storytelling,” Mosh said. “When everyone fully understands and connects with the vision, the performances speak volumes.”

As Agemo continues its successful festival run, anticipation builds for what Director Mosh will create next. Regardless of his upcoming projects, one thing remains certain — his commitment to excellence and elevating African storytelling remains unwavering.
