A United Kingdom court has sentenced a 45-year-old Nigerian, Obinwa Obichukwu, to two years’ imprisonment for sexually assaulting a woman at Euston railway station in London.
Obichukwu, who lives on Armstrong Close in Borehamwood, was convicted on two counts of sexual assault after a trial at Inner London Crown Court.
The offences occurred on August 20, 2023, when the victim was walking towards Euston station.
According to evidence presented in court, Obichukwu approached the woman and struck up a conversation by asking about the music she was listening to. He then put his arm around her, invited her to his home and repeatedly professed his love while holding her hand as they walked along Euston Road.
Prosecutors said the situation escalated when the woman reached the station entrance, where Obichukwu blocked her path and sexually assaulted her.
The victim continued towards the Underground platforms, but the defendant allegedly followed her and assaulted her again near the ticket barriers before she managed to push him away and flee.
The incident was reported to the British Transport Police, whose investigators reviewed CCTV footage that helped identify and prosecute the suspect.
During the trial, Obichukwu claimed the encounter was consensual, but the jury rejected his defence and found him guilty in January.
At his sentencing on July 21, the court imposed a two-year prison term and issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He was also placed on the UK sex offenders register for 10 years.
Reacting to the judgment, British Transport Police Detective Constable Daniel Burke said the conviction demonstrated the force’s commitment to tackling violence against women and girls.
He noted that Obichukwu deliberately targeted a lone woman at one of London’s busiest transport hubs and commended the victim for reporting the incident.
Burke also encouraged anyone who experiences or witnesses sexual offences on the railway network to report them to the British Transport Police.
